Water Levels – April 23, 2020

Here are the highlights of yesterday’s (April 23, 2020) inspection:

Lofton Weir. According to the Operation and Maintenance plan both the high and low weir control gates are to be open when the water level at North Lindstrom Lake exceeds 899.2. Yesterday, the water level of Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom is 899.32.  The high and low weir gates were opened on April 2nd.  The weir is to remain open until Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom water levels are lowered to 898.7. 

North Lindstrom Lake. A water level gauge is located on North Lindstrom Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge yesterday was 899.32 (per 2019 DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Chisago/South Lindstrom/North Lindstrom Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 0.88 feet below OHW.

Paradise Park Weir. This weir is a fixed cable concrete weir that drains Chisago Lake into Wallmark Lake under high water conditions. The weir has a permanent outlet elevation of 899.2. The water level was one inch over the weir. Water is flowing from Chisago Lake over the weir toward Wallmark Lake.

Lake Ellen Weir. The weir is to be open during the open water season when Little Green Lake water levels exceed 891.0. The weir was initially opened on March 26th. Water is flowing through the weir into Swamp Lake. Unless downstream issues arise, it is anticipated the weir will remain open until fall.  The water level at the weir yesterday was 891.30.

Little Green Lake. The water level gauge for Little Green Lake is currently not available.  The Little Green Lake elevation is similar to Lake Ellen.  Lake Ellen is currently at 891.30.

South Center Lake. The water level gauge for South Center Lake is currently not available.  Updates will be provided once the gauge is installed and calibrated.  Water is flowing through the channel between North Center and North Lindstrom Lakes.  The water levels of North/South Center Lakes are similar to the levels of North/South Lindstrom/Chisago Lakes.  North Lindstrom Lake elevation is currently at 899.32.  The Ordinary High Water level of North & South Center Lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 0.88 feet below OHW.

Yesterday, the water level of Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom is 899.62.  The high and low weir gates were opened yesterday.  The weir is to remain open until Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom water levels are lowered to 898.7. 

North Lindstrom Lake. A water level gauge is located on North Lindstrom Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge yesterday was 899.62 (per 2019 DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Chisago/South Lindstrom/North Lindstrom Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 0.58 feet below OHW.

Paradise Park Weir. This weir is a fixed cable concrete weir that drains Chisago Lake into Wallmark Lake under high water conditions. The weir has a permanent outlet elevation of 899.2. The water level was a few inches over the weir. Water is flowing from Chisago Lake over the weir toward Wallmark Lake.

Lake Ellen Weir. The weir is to be open during the open water season when Little Green Lake water levels exceed 891.0. The weir was initially opened on March 26th. Water is flowing through the weir into Swamp Lake. Unless downstream issues arise, it is anticipated the weir will remain open until fall.  The water level at the weir today is 891.67.

Little Green Lake. The water level gauge for Little Green Lake is currently not available.  The Little Green Lake elevation is similar to Lake Ellen.  Lake Ellen is currently at 891.67.

South Center Lake. The water level gauge for South Center Lake is currently not available.  Updates will be provided once the gauge is installed and calibrated.  Water is flowing through the channel between North Center and North Lindstrom Lakes.  The water levels of North/South Center Lakes are similar to the levels of North/South Lindstrom/Chisago Lakes.  North Lindstrom Lake elevation is currently at 899.62.

The high weir was opened on April 19.  The weir is to remain open until Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom water levels are lowered to 898.7.  Today, the water level of Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom is 898.66The high weir was closed today.

North Lindstrom Lake. A water level gauge is located on North Lindstrom Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge today was 898.66 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Chisago/South Lindstrom/North Lindstrom Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 1.54 feet below OHW.

Paradise Park Weir. This weir is a fixed cable concrete weir that drains Chisago Lake into Wallmark Lake under high water conditions. The weir has a permanent outlet elevation of 899.2. Today the water level is below the crest of the weir. Water is not flowing from Chisago Lake over the weir toward Wallmark Lake.

Lake Ellen Weir. The weir is to be open during the open water season when Little Green Lake water levels exceed 891.0. The weir was initially opened on April 10. Water is flowing through the weir into Swamp Lake. Unless downstream issues arise, it is anticipated the weir will remain open until fall.

Little Green Lake. A water level gauge is located on Little Green Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge today was 891.66 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Green/Little Green/Ellen Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 892.5. The lakes are 0.84 feet below OHW.

South Center Lake. A water level gauge is located on South Center Lake. The water level elevation taken at this gauge today is 898.70 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of North and South Center Lakes. The Ordinary High Water Level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 1.5 feet below OHW.

LID staff are taking weekly lake level readings on other lakes in the Chisago Lakes area. Lake level readings are published weekly in the Chisago County Press.

According to Jerry Spetzman, Chisago Lakes  Lake Improvement District Administrator, here are the highlights of today’s (June 20, 2019) inspection:

Lofton Weir. According to the Operation and Maintenance plan both the high and low weir control gates are to be open when the water level at North Lindstrom Lake exceeds 899.2. The high weir was opened on April 19. At that time water levels were not high enough to flow over the weir. On May 9 the Low weir was opened and water is flowing through the weir into Green Lake. The weir will remain open until Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom waterlevels are lowered to 898.7 at which time the weir will be closed.

North Lindstrom Lake. A water level gauge is located on North Lindstrom Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge today was 898.80 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Chisago/South Lindstrom/North Lindstrom Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 1.4 feet below OHW.

Today the water level is below the crest of the weir. Water is not flowing from Chisago Lake over the weir toward Wallmark Lake. The estimated water level elevation at this weir is 898.87.

Lake Ellen Weir. The weir is to be open during the open water season when Little Green Lake water levels exceed 891.0. The weir was initially opened on April 10. Water is flowing through the weir into Swamp Lake. Unless downstream issues arise, it is anticipated the weir will remain open until fall.

Little Green Lake. A water level gauge is located on Little Green Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge today was 891.64 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Green/Little Green/Ellen Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 892.5. The lakes are 0.86 feet below OHW.

South Center Lake. A water level gauge is located on South Center Lake. The water level elevation was taken at this gauge Tuesday, June 17.  At that time the water level elevation was 898.97 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of North and South Center Lakes. The Ordinary High Water Level of these lakes is 900.2. At the time of the readings the lakes were 1.23 feet below OHW.

Updated Water Levels – 6/12/19

According to the Chisago Lakes Lake Improvement District’s Administrator, Jerry Spetzman the highlights of today’s (June 12, 2019) inspection are:

Lofton Weir. According to the Operation and Maintenance plan both the high and low weir control gates are to be open when the water level at North Lindstrom Lake exceeds 899.2. The high weir was opened on April 19. At that time water levels were not high enough to flow over the weir. On May 9 the Low weir was opened and water is flowing through the weir into Green Lake. The weir will remain open until Chisago/North Lindstrom/South Lindstrom water levels are lowered to 898.7 at which time the weir will be closed.

North Lindstrom Lake. A water level gauge is located on North Lindstrom Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge today was 899.09 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Chisago/South Lindstrom/North Lindstrom Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 1.11 feet below OHW.

Water is flowing through the weir into Swamp Lake. Unless downstream issues arise, it is anticipated the weir will remain open until fall.

Little Green Lake. A water level gauge is located on Little Green Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge today was 891.78 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Green/Little Green/Ellen Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 892.5. The lakes are 0.72 feet below OHW.

South Center Lake. A water level gauge is located on South Center Lake. The water level elevation at this gauge today was 899.21 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of North and South Center Lakes. The Ordinary High Water Level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are 0.99 feet below OHW.

LID staff are taking weekly lake level readings on other lakes in the Chisago Lakes area. The DNR calibration process is nearly complete. Lake level readings will be made public as the DNR completes the calibration process.

Lofton Weir Flowage

Did you know that the Chisago Lakes Lake Improvement District manages the flow of water through our watershed to help regulate and maintain a steady lake level?

Here are pictures taken last week of the flowage through the Lofton Avenue Weir (located at the south end of Chisago Lake) as it flows into Green Lake.  Eventually this water will empty into the Sunrise River and join up with the St. Croix River.

This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Green/Little Green/Ellen Lakes. The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 892.5. The lakes are 0.69 feet below OHW.

South Center Lake. A water level gauge is located on South Center Lake.  The water level elevation at this gauge today was 899.44 (per DNR gauge calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of North and South Center Lakes. The Ordinary High Water Level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are approximately 0.76 foot below OHW.

Lake Level Updates as of May 30th

During high water, please watch your speeds when cruising along the shorelines – many properties are experiencing damage from your wakes.

The Chisago Lakes Lake Improvement District’s Administrator, Jerry Spetzman sent the highlights of today’s (May 30, 2019) inspection:

Lofton Weir.  This weir drains water from Chisago/North/South Lindstrom into Green Lake. According to the Operation and Maintenance plan both the high and low weir control gates are to be open when the water level exceeds 899.2. The high weir was opened on April 19. At that time water levels were not high enough to flow over the weir. On May 9 the Low weir was opened and water is flowing through the weir into Green Lake. The weir will remain open until water levels are lowered to 898.7 at which time the weir will be closed.

North Lindstrom Lake.  A water level gauge is located on North Lindstrom Lake.  The water level elevation at this gauge today was 899.50 (per Chisago County Surveyor calibration).  This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of Chisago/South Lindstrom/North Lindstrom Lakes.  The Ordinary High Water level of these lakes is 900.2.  The lakes are 0.7 feet below OHW.

Lake Ellen Weir. The water level at the Lake Ellen weir today was 891.54. This is a good representation of the water levels of Green/Little Green/Ellen Lakes. The OHW of these lakes is 892.5.  The lakes are approximately 1 foot below OHW.  The weir is to be open during the open water season when water levels exceed 891.0. The weir was initially opened on April 10. Water is flowing through the weir into Swamp Lake. Unless downstream issues arise, it is anticipated the weir will remain open until fall.

North/South Center Lakes. Today the water level of South Center Lake was 899.49 (per Chisago County Surveyor calibration). This elevation is a good representation of the water levels of North and South Center Lakes. The Ordinary High Water Level of these lakes is 900.2. The lakes are approximately 0.7 foot below OHW.
